TRAINING VISA REQUIREMENTS

  • The 407 visa aims to promote international goodwill by allowing Australian organisations to sponsor persons to travel to Australia to participate in occupational training activities, including workplace-based professional development activities.
  • Subclass 407 visa holders may be eligible to proceed to a TSS visa following completion of their training programme.

Who can apply for the Subclass 407 visa?

  • This visa is available to applicants who have the support of a sponsoring employer, and who have 12 months of work experience obtained within the last two years in the relevant occupation. Applicants can be in or outside of Australia and must be nominated by an Australian organisation that is lawfully operating within Australia.

About this visa

There are three types of occupational training which qualify for this visa:

1. Workplace-based training required for registration

2. Structured workplace-based training to enhance skills in an eligible occupation

3. Training that promotes capacity building overseas (this type includes the following categories):

    • Overseas qualification
    • Government support
    • Professional development

APPLICATION PROCESS

There are 3 stages to the training visa application process:

Step 1. Temporary Activities Sponsor

  • Employers and training organisations will apply to the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) for Temporary Activities Sponsor approval. Sponsorship approval is granted for a period of up to 5 years.
  • Once approved, you may then nominate any number of foreign nationals to undertake training in your organisation.

Step 2. Nomination

  • An approved sponsor then nominates the position to be filled by an overseas occupational trainee.
  • The nomination process identifies the nomination eligibility type, details of the proposed training program, position to be filled, skills, qualifications and experience required for the position and the person who has been nominated to take part in the activity.

Step 3. 407 Visa Application

  • The employee would then apply for a 407 visa to work in Australia in the nominated position.
  • The applicant must have the skills and experience needed for the nominated position, meet English language, health and character requirements for the visa and hold suitable health insurance.

PROCESSING TIMES

The current timeline for allocation of cases for assessment is 3 to 5 months. Processing times vary depending on the quality of submission, the size of the business and the nature of the position being nominated.

PLEASE NOTE: We estimate that it may take several weeks to prepare and lodge your application, with the time taken largely dependent on how promptly you provide us with the necessary supporting information and documents.

The time that it takes the DOHA to process your application is dependent upon its processing time service standards and may also vary due to a number of other factors, including the complexity of your case, perceived risk factors and processing priorities.
